Fan Expo 2017: The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley Reunite in Dallas

The Vampire Diaries' Salvatore Brothers at Fan Expo Dallas 2017

“I always thought the brothers would die together, and Elena…she would be compelled not to remember them.”

To say the wound is still fresh for The Vampire Diaries fans after the series finale aired on March 10, 2017 is an understatement.  Coming into the completely packed TVD panel hosted by Fan Expo Dallas, it’s not hard to figure out just how loyal the show’s fans are.  Of course, a big reason why the show was so successful was the Salvatore brothers, Damon and Stefan.  Their love triangle and brotherly bond were central conflicts in the show for the entirety of the series.  Even after both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder were held up finishing photo ops for 20 minutes and 40 minutes respectively, there was nothing but cheers and love.

Paul found his way into the panel first and quickly jumped into audience questions for the sake of time.  When asked about what he would have originally predicted for the ending of the show, he stated

“I always thought the brothers would die together, and Elena would forget them…she would be compelled not to remember them.”

He later fanned the flames of fanfiction writers everywhere when he gave a surprising answer to the question, “If the brothers did get into a fight, who would win?” See what he said below:

He joked with the audience when asked what he would do if he could truly compel someone before settling on his real answer.  How did the audience react?

While the audience loved the one-on-one time with Paul, everyone went wild when Ian finally made it and joined his on-screen brother on stage.  He quickly confirmed that Damon and Stefan would indeed make love, not war, sending a round of laughter through the crowd.  The duo resumed answering audience questions about the show, including their favorite scene to shoot:

Paul also discussed his initial worry about playing the “good” brother, and how excited he was when he found out he was going to get to be a baddie too.

At some point, another famous set of brothers – the Winchesters – came up in conversation, and when asked whether they would have loved to see a 1967 Impala ride into town on that last day, Ian hilarious replied,

“Is that the car they drive?  Is it an Impala?  Because I know in the show I drive a 1967 blue Camaro, and I thought…maybe her shade of blue is a little darker.”

Ian then insisted that the Winchesters would never harm the Salvatores because they would be such good friends in real life.  Paul admitted shortly after that he believes he might have actually auditioned for Supernatural when it first came on, but…

Paul: “They didn’t like me.”

Ian: “Well, I like you.”

Cue the awws!  Watch Paul and Ian hypothesize on why Jared and Jensen have had such a great run below:

Unfortunately, the duo were informed at that point that the allotted time for the Q&A was over, leaving both actors and audience members alike brokenhearted once more.  Still, these two blazed a trail into Dallas and lit everyone’s hearts on fire once more, so don’t be surprised if you feel the need to binge watch the show from the beginning after this!
