Disney’s live-action Mulan has found its star!
Liu Yifei (a.k.a. Crystal Liu) has been cast as Hua Mulan after a long, worldwide search to find its lead. Liu got her breakout in films from her native country, China. This will add to the list of live-action Disney films, like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. The story of Mulan follows a young warrior who takes the place of her father, disguised as a man, in an army in China.
Nicknamed “Fairy Sister” in China, Liu got her breakout roles from being on television shows in the 2000s. She’s starred in films like The Forbidden Kingdom (Jackie Chan and Jet Li), Outcast (Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen), and more.
The film inspired by both the 1998 animated film and the centuries-old folktale will be directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife).
