SDCC 2017: Top Off-Site Activities This Year
San Diego Comic-Con is here, and it’s expected to be another great year in the world of TV, Film, and all things nerdy. Neerdeek, the sister site of TV After Dark, will be there all week! We’re expecting Comic-Con to be crazy again and filled with tons of surprises. SDCC has been around for what seems like forever and has been getting better and better every year. Sure the wait can be annoying at times, it is far outnumbered by all of the exciting things to do.

If you’ve attended before, you know it’s a lot of waiting, especially if you are planning on doing just about anything at Hall H or Ballroom 20. And if you fancy any good show or expected pilot, chances are you’ll be spending a lot of time there this year. And not to worry, there are many things to do when you’re not waiting. Not only is the convention itself fun, but also features so many activities outside the convention center. So if you’ll be attending SDCC this year, here are some of the off-site events and activities to be on the lookout for!
Game of Thrones and Westworld are hosting off-site events
Get ready GOT and Westworld fans, they’re coming for you.
Next, A new season of Game of Thrones and Westworld are coming and not only are they having their own panels, but HBO is also hosting off-site exhibits this year at SDCC for the two shows. HBO is keeping the specific details for a surprise, but here’s what we know so far. Game of Thrones will take over with a ‘Winter is Here Experience,’ which will open on Thursday, July 20 and run through Sunday, July 23 at 728 L St. in San Diego. The Westworld off-site has not announced a location as of yet, but the experience center will also be open Thursday through Sunday. The Game of Thrones and Westworld events will surely be amazing.
Tokidoki and Peanuts are coming to SDCC
Tokidoki and Peanuts are bringing a fashion exhibit and pop up shop to San Diego Comic-Con
Here comes Snoopy. A new exhibit called ‘Snoopy & Belle in Fashion’ is set to debut at SDCC with the latest addition designed by Tokidoki’s Simone Legno. Snoopy & Belle is a long-running exhibit by Peanuts Worldwide that has been traveling to cities across the country. This year it’s moving from a month-long stay in Washington DC to the Gaslamp District of San Diego for Comic-Con. This collaboration between Tokidoki and Peanuts is a fresh new take on the exhibit. It mixes the Peanuts we all know and love with a contemporary style from Tokidoki. The style is inspired by Japanese trends in arts and culture. The Peanuts pop-up store will be at SDCC throughout the week at 226 Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District.
The Nintendo Lounge
The Nintendo Lounge is back again this year!
The SDCC Nintendo Gaming Lounge has been a huge hit over the years. Even some of the guys of Teen Wolf got involved in the past. In the Nintendo Gaming Lounge, Nintendo is featuring their popular games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pokémon Sun, Pokémon Moon, and more! There is also a good chance Nintendo will feature new unreleased games as well as tournaments, demonstrations. There maybe even be some dance parties. As an added bonus, if you pre-order games Nintendo will give you points and some free prizes too. The Nintendo Lounge opens Thursday through Saturday from 10AM-7PM and Sunday from 10 PM to 5 PM.
Funko Pop! Up Shop
The Pop! Up Shop is back and this time, Funko is teaming up with Warner Bros
Funko’s vinyl figures have been a huge hit for the pop-culture licensed toys from characters of Marvel, Hasbro, Lucas Films, DC Comics, and more. Funko’s Pop! Up Shop was an off-site exhibit at SDCC last year that was crazy popular and is back for more. This time, Funko has teamed up with Warner Bros in the Pop! Up Shop to feature a ton of new exclusives. Beware, it’s on a first come first-serve basis and the line can get crazy long fast for these popular things!
Her Universe 4th Annual Fashion Show
Her Universe is back for more in another fashion show this year!
The popular clothing brand, Her Universe, was created by Ashley Eckstein with a nerdy inspired theme. The company is teaming up with Hot Topic of all places for a nerdy fashion show. Based on the previous year’s this year’s fashion show is expected to have a ton of looks inspired by superheroes, villains, and more. To make it even more fun, fans can submit their own pieces for the show. We’re hoping to see some Stranger Things-inspired looks! The fun takes place at 6:00 pm on Thursday, July 20 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel.
Wrecked Pop-Up Island
You can get Wrecked on the Wrecked Pop-Up Island during Comic-Con
TBS Isn’t playing any games this year. To promote the new TBS show Wrecked, which follows a group of strangers after their plane crashes on an uninhabitable island, TBS created an actual floating island. The Wrecked Pop-Up island will have coconut skeeball, a mechanical boar, and a floating island bar. It is a 21+ event.
You could previously get tickets to the event, but it has now been changed to a first come first-serve basis, so tickets are no longer needed. The Wrecked Pop-Up Island will be at the Marina right outside of the Convention Center and it will be hard to miss! The floating island docks Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23.You can find more information on the TBS Facebook.
San Diego Symphony’s Presents ‘The Music of John Williams
San Diego Symphony will feature the music of John Williams’ greatest soundtracks of all time
John Williams pioneered some of the greatest soundtracks in his compositions from films like Superman, the Star Wars franchise, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and E.T. to name a few. The local symphony, the San Diego Symphony, will host a nerd-filled concert to celebrate some of his greatest hits. You can also expect the symphony to perform a few of Williams’ newest pieces from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The concert is on Saturday, July 22, at the Copley Symphony Hall beginning at 7:30 pm. But expect to come early when doors open at 6:00 pm for Star Wars-themed cocktails a costume contest, and a Cantina Band. Tickets are only $20-$35 and can be purchased on the San Diego Symphony website.
Syfy Channel Presents
Syfy is bringing the heat this year and giving life back to Nerd HQ
Not only is Syfy hosting some amazing panels like Wynonna Earp, Krypton, The Magicians, Expanse, and not to mention a Battlestar Galactica reunion, but is also hosting some fun-filled off-site events. Syfy will be hosting Syfy Presents Live from Comic-Con again, which will be held EVERY NIGHT during SDCC from Thursday-Saturday which will be held at the Marriott Marquis & Marina hosted by Zachary Levi! The special will also feature surprise guests each night. So they’ll discuss the biggest news to come from that day, talk released trailers, and more! Syfy Presents Live from Comic-Con will air on Syfy at 11/10c Thursday through Sunday night.
Finally, Syfy is also teaming up with Zachary Levi again to give Nerd HQ and The Nerd Machine (sort-of) a presence this year after Zac announced they did not have the fund for Nerd-HQ to be fully back. Well, guess what? Syfy is helping to bring dance parties we all know and love from Nerd HQ back! The events will be held at the San Diego New Children’s Museum once again. Zac has also promised a “Nerd HQ Auction” which will benefit Operation Smile at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. Although Friday is invite-only like part years, Saturday is free and open to all, so be sure to stop by and donate to a great cause. Syfy isn’t holding back one bit for San Diego Comic Con this year!
San Diego Comic-Con is held Wednesday, July 19 through Sunday, July 23 at the San Diego Convention Center.
