Sharknado 5: Global Swarming Makes SDCC Great Again

The cast calls the film “Incest. Global. Families. Insanity. Borderless. Improv. Nut. Disasteralicious.”

Syfy’s spooftastic hit Sharknado is coming back to our televisions bigger, wilder, and bloodier! Sharknado 5: Global Swarming sees the deadly weather phenomenon of shark-infested storms bombard cities around the world, was filmed in more than five countries, including in the UK and Australia. Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will reprise their roles as shark-fighting heroes Fin Shepard and April Wexler, as well as featuring the return of original cast member Cassie Scerbo as Nova, a bartender turned badass Sharknado fighter. Keeping with tradition, there will be a slew of great cameos, including Fabio, Anthony Ferrante, Chloe Lattanzi, and Chris Kattan.

The cast of Sharknado 5 sat down for a panel with fans on Friday, July 21st. They were joined by show director Anthony Ferrante, co-writer Scotty Mullen, and producer David Rimawi. With a movie as outlandish and hilarious as the Sharknado series, it’s not surprising that the panel was equally entertaining. Topics ranging from weapons and favorite cameos to new locations and future directions were discussed. The audience was also treated to not just one, but two, clips from the upcoming movie. The first was a behind the scenes look at the filming in London, followed by a SDCC exclusive (“Syfy hasn’t even seen it yet”) clip of the movie involving a rather rock ‘n’ roll cameo. As usual, we ended with a Q&A, but just like the films, it was a good time had by all!

“As the writer, my favorite cameo is anyone who said yes.” – Scotty Mullen

Things kicked off with an introduction of the new cast members, including Fabio and Chloe Lattanzi. Chris Kattan came on stage as a surprise addition, to the delight of all the fans in the room. While Chris was announced as playing the prime minister, the room erupted in delight at the announcement that Fabio was playing…wait for it…the Pope! In fact, he had this to say:

“I loved playing the Pope. Imagine walking out and having 1.2 million people get on their knees.”

Discussion of the current film led to a trip down memory lane, and Tara Reid revealed that when Ian and she were reading for the first film, it was titled “Dark Skies.” The two jokingly commented that they both called their agents insisting to be taken off when the real title was revealed, claiming it would ruin their careers. Of course, we know that the cast has loved how popular the series of films have become, and Anthony gave us some insight into why it’s so much fun.

“Each movie we get to do a different genre. This one is James Bond meets Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

He additionally told us that he loves a moment where

“We do an homage to Lady and the Tramp where two sharks eat the intestines out of the chef.”

Chris jumped in and mentioned that

“I say the word Boop, and when you see it you’ll see why it’s one of my favorite moments.”

Tara agreed enthusiastically, which makes us super excited to see this scene! When asked about the latest round of weaponry being used in Sharknado 5, the cast had quite the interesting mix of favorites!

“We’ve upgraded to a Wolverine claw in this movie.” – Cassie

“I’m the prime minister and I use my penis.” – Chris

“I have all the gadgets in this one…I’m Inspector Gadget.” – Tara

When asked about whether he has a final film ending in mind for when the series is over, Anthony reported that

“We have an idea of the final film ending, but we don’t know if it’ll change because of how many films are being made.”

When it came to the fan Q&A session, the funny ball just kept rolling as the cast gave hilarious answers to the random questions being asked. One fan decided to ask about whether zombies could make a cameo in a future film, and David hinted that Russell from Z-Nation may be making a surprise appearance. As for other dream cameos, we all agreed when Ian said Bruce Willis! Another fan wanted the scoop on possibly new weapons that could be used in the future, and the cast had immediate answers.

“A bigger chainsaw. The one they had in the film wasn’t big enough.” – Fabio

“A George Foreman grill.” – Chris

“April, get on the unicorns! I can sell that!” – Ian

While fans threw out potential plotlines for Sharknado 6, Anthony, Scotty, and David “took notes” for the future, admitting that some of them had crossed their minds already. When a young fan asked the cast who they would kill off of the main cast, Chloe said

“April. I would kill off April so I could take over.”

Now, with Fabio on the cameo list, the question turned inevitably to his glorious blond hair. He geniusly quipped an answer to the question of what he does to keep his hair fresh by answering

“American Women.”

There was one truly memorable moment during which a young fan asked the panel why the disasters were called Sharknados when they are clearly hurricanes. She stumped the panel, and they resorted to joke answers like

“Science. It’s science, right?”

“Sharknado. That’s our answer to any question. It’s a Sharknado.”

How excited are you to see the actual movie after hearing about the insanely funny panel discussion we had today?? Well, have no fear, because Sharknado 5: Global Swarming will be coming to your small screens on August 6th on Syfy!
