Syfy’s Krypton and the History of the House of El
“The blood of House El will always bind us together.”
Syfy‘s Krypton brings us the story of Seg-El and his battle to redeem the House of El and save his planet. The show takes place two generations before the Man of Steel’s birth and focuses on his grandfather.
Moderated by DC Comics‘ Geoff Johns, the Krypton panel at San Diego Comic Con featured lead Cameron Cuffe (Seg-El) and showrunners Damian Kindler and Cameron Welsh.
Johns opened the panel explaining what has happened to the House of El:
“Due to events outside of Seg’s control, his family legacy is stripped and they’re thrown into the very bottom of Kryptonian society. One of the massive arcs of the show is how does Seg earn the legacy of the symbol.”
Cuffe asks about the House of El symbol:
“How does that symbol comes to mean what it means to everyone around the world?”
There might also be some time-travel:
“It’s a show that, although it takes place centuries ago on Krypton about the House of El, it’s about a conspiracy from the present that has traveled back in time to Krypton to prevent Superman’s legacy from ever happening.”
Welsh is excited about what this means for the story:
“It changes the stakes of the show completely…. It’s not a look backwards. It’s quite unique. It allows us to deepen and expand upon the known mythology.”
Johns tells us to expect to see some beloved characters from the comics:
“Adam Strange and Hawkwoman come to Krypton trying to stop the conspiracy and save Superman’s legacy. Doomsday will be in the show. Brainiac is long overdue to be on screen like that.”
Kindler had this to say about Brainiac:
“He has a really deep, rich history. He is the nexus point between man and machine, which is an incredibly real thing to talk about now.”
Krypton is a new and exciting take on a familiar and beloved story, exploring Superman’s history and the bonds of family.
