Syfy’s ‘Wynonna Earp’ Escapes Purgatory for SDCC 2017

“It’s like my biggest, uhh… my biggest role to date so it was kind of like, ok, I’m going into this show with this crazy cult following.”

Syfy’s mega hit series Wynonna Earp escaped the Revenants of Purgatory to take a trip to San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 22nd. Based on the graphic novel series by the same name and now in its second season (just renewed for a third), the series cast and creators and many Earpers from across the world, packed themselves into Room 5AB for a panel no Earper will ever forget. We were joined at a roundtable interview by Wynonna Earp series stars Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Shamier Anderson, Tim Rozon, Katherine Barrell, Varun Saranga, Tamara Duarte along with Executive Producer Emily Andras and Wynonna Earp comic creator Beau Smith to discuss what it’s like to watch the fandom grow, Wynonna’s baby daddy, and Whiskey… obviously.

We had the absolute pleasure of sitting down and chatting with the Wynonna Earp crew this past weekend and not only did we discover that Tim is a serious comic book fan, we also learned that playing demon possessed Gooverly and Goononna was one of the most enjoyable experiences Melanie and Dominique have had on set.

The one common thread throughout our interviews was that there’s no question that the Earper fandom is the heart and soul of Wynonna Earp and it is what keeps the stars and creators of the show going. We asked Executive Producer, Emily Andras, what it has been like for her to watch the fandom grow and she answered

“It’s been a dream come true. Like, I know people say that, but this show is all fandom… it really it.”

We also sat down with Tamara Duarte (Rosita) and Tim Rozon (Doc Holiday) and we got to bring out a bit of the fun side of the two. When asked about what type of product Doc and Rosita would be a spokesperson for, Tamara immediately thought the same as most of us, Whiskey! But much to our surprise, Tim had other plans for doc, he said with a grin on his face

“You’d think it would be something old-timey but uh, I had a lot of fun this year playing with the, uh… Doc was on his phone a lot so I think it’d be something futuristic.”

Tamara smiling added,

“I can’t beat that. I think it would be just like Tequila or something.”

New resident nerd of Purgatory, Varun Saranga (Jeremy) and the ever brooding Black Badge Division agent, Shamier Anderson (Dolls) made a stop by our table to discuss what is was like for Varun to join the cast of a show with a growing cult following. Varun replied,

“Real scary, it was exciting, it was different. It’s like my biggest, uhh… my biggest role to date so it was kind of like, ok, I’m going into this show with this crazy cult following. I had no idea – I was on a plane ride over going on Twitter just like okay, yeah, people will kill me if I suck at this.”

Melanie (Wynonna) joined us and of course, we had many questions, but one of the questions we were most excited about asking was what scene was she most looking forward to the fans seeing in the season. She teased,

“The end. I’m so proud of our work. I’m just… you know what? The end because of everything that builds up to it. Um… I think we’ve earned it. I think we earned that finale.”

Can you guess what Melanie said Wynonna would be the spokesperson for? What would Jeremy and Dolls cosplay as if he came to Comic-Con? What song would Waverly and Nicole sing if they were out at a karaoke bar? What has been Beau Smith’s favorite episode so far? Doc, the spokesperson of a spa? You’ll have to check out our full interview to find out the answers. Look out for our Wynonna Earp interview video coming soon!
