Freeform’s Shadowhunters teases love and chaos at NYCC 2017

“It doesn’t matter that he’s brought back from the dead.  Now he’s an undead sexy Shadowhunter!”

Fresh off the success of their appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Freeform’s Shadowhunters returned to New York Comic Con to chat with fans and tease insights into what is coming up for season three!

Based on the bestselling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Shadowhunters follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

The panel was moderated by TV Guide’s Jim Halterman, with executive producers Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer and Matt Hastings and series stars Katherine McNamara, Matthew Daddario, Isaiah Mustafa and Alisha Wainwright joining him on stage.

The panel gave fans an exclusive first look at the upcoming third season and teased what is in store for our favorite Shadowhunters and Downworlders. Afterwards, Todd, Darren, and Matt revealed that

“We’re going heavily into the books in season three.”

Discussion turned quickly towards how the events of the season two finale affected each of the characters. Isaiah talks about the fallout of Luke’s new partner discovering his werewolf secret, saying

“He’s very protective of [this part of his life], so he’s wary of anyone saying they know something about it.”

Kat adds that after bringing Jace back to life with Raziel,

“There’s a lot going on between Jace and Clary. They have a secret that they can’t share with anyone.”

As for our favorite beta wolf, the executive producers confirmed that Alisha will be coming back as a series regular for the next season! She responds by referring to another Freeform show, saying

“I’m ‘beyond’ excited that I’m a season regular now.”

Malec fans didn’t have to wait long for Matt to comment on the status of the fan favorite duo, telling us that

“There’s an element of stress. He’s getting into the more complex parts of his relationship with Magnus.”

Obviously, we know that the show has more than its fair share of fight scenes and stunt work, and season three is apparently no different. Kat reported to us that

“There’s one part of a fight I’m very excited about. We have our first dual wire gag.”

Isaiah joked that

“I love flying into walls. As a werewolf, it’s so much fun flying into walls.”

Kat didn’t want to be left out of the show crossover talk.  So, she quipped

“They [the stunt team] just go above and ‘beyond’ for us.”

When it came to fan questions, the topic turned to one particular pairing that we have yet to see on screen: Sizzy! Before anyone else could answer, Alisha shouted

“No! (giggling) I just channeled Maia there…”

Matt shared his frustration over his character’s parabatai, saying

“He never gets less sexy. It doesn’t matter that he’s brought back from the dead.  Now he’s an undead sexy Shadowhunter!”

It’s not all jokes and laughter, though, and we do get exclusive information on the new faces coming up for this season!

“We’ve cast Lilith. It’s Anna Hopkins from a show we worked on called Defiance.”

“We also have Javier Munoz – you may know him from Hamilton – and he’ll be going up against Magnus.”

Before they ended, Jim revealed exclusively that Freeform added 10 more episodes to season 3 that will be airing next summer! We don’t know about you, but more Shadowhunters always makes our day! Stay tuned for our cast interviews with Kat, Matt, Isaiah, and Alisha, along with EPs Todd, Darren, and Matt!
